The Ogham pendants are approximately 3/4 to 1 inch across, 1 1/4 inches long, and hang at 2 1/4 inches. A beautiful marble bead from Ireland finishes this piece and hangs from a leather or alternative cord.

Please make bead color choice and cord/chain selection at checkout. The Irish marble bead choices are green Connemara Marble, Cork Red, and Kilkenny Black.

The pendant pictured has sold, this will be custom made and vary slightly from the pendant pictured!!

The Celtic meaning of the Blackthorn Tree speaks of:
Inevitability
Preparation
Constraint
Strife

Among the Celts, this sacred tree of the Ogham was considered a portent of challenges ahead, but with the promise of improvement once we push through those challenges.

The Druids recognized portents struggle intuitively in the formation of the blackthorn tree's growth. This tree has some wicked thorns that are ominous looking at best. Indeed, when cut by these thorns the human flesh can turn septic fairly rapidly.

In autumn it turns a sulfurous yellow and when these leaves drop they expose a contorted body. This mangled imagery brought the concept of strife and suffering to the Celtic mind.

These visual observations made the blackthorn a symbol of the other half of life that we often shrink back from. When the blackthorn showed itself in Ogham oracle practices, it could be considered as a portent of war, illness or discouragement. It was a sign to get ready and brace yourself.

The blackthorn is not all bad. On the contrary, the Celts observed that this tree produced some of the sweetest berries among the sacred tribe of trees. However, these berries were at their most succulent and sweetest after a hard frost. Here again we see symbolism of strife – but in this light we are shown that the blessing comes after the challenge.

In this way the blackthorn shows us that our very best fruits sometimes come after trials, setbacks and tribulations. We would do well to keep this in mind as we are in the midst of our challenges: We will come out on the other side better and sweeter than we were before.

Furthermore, the blackthorn is a message that preparation is often the best solution for any difficulty. When we encounter the blackthorn in our experience, (either in our nature walks or by oracle), it is a time to honor the bounty we already have, and take practical measures to button up any loose ends we might trip over in the future. The message of the blackthorn should not be observed as all gloom. Rather, it can be a message of opportunity if we embrace our experiences as an avenue for growth.

Copper and Bronze jewelry, including pieces with colorful patina, should not be exposed to water. Please do not shower or swim while wearing jewelry as it can drastically change the patina on the metal. All copper and bronze jewelry is treated with a protective spray lacquer to help maintain the appearance of the metal. Normal daily wear can break down the protective barrier in extreme heat and sweat.

Silver jewelry is NOT treated with a protective lacquer. Please use a soft polishing cloth to buff and bring the shine to silver. Do not use harsh chemicals as it will drastically change the patina on the metal.

Copper and bronze jewelry are sealed with a lacquer to protect the metal and to provide a barrier between the metal and your skin. Jewelry should not be subjected to water for long periods of time, please do not swim or shower while wearing jewelry, this will break down the sealant and the color of the metal will change. Copper and bronze may have a chemical reaction with your skin leaving a green color. This is by no means dangerous to you in any way and it doesn't happen to everyone, it's just what these metals do when moisture is present.

Copper and bronze jewelry that have had patina colors added are extremely vulnerable to exposure to water and other liquids. I treat each piece of jewelry with layers of sealant to protect the coloration. these pieces should never be immersed in water, please do not swim or shower while wearing a piece of jewelry that has patina color.
The sealant may start to break down naturally over time, if you wish to reseal it, I would recommend suing Permalac spray sealant.

Please be aware that I create each piece of jewelry by hand, one at a time, and each piece is creatively unique. I sometimes use measurements that are approximate, I am not trying to misrepresent my work in any way by doing this. I measure each piece of jewelry and include these dimensions in several places in the listing. If a pendant is a tiny fraction of an inch short, I will say..."just under one inch" in the description. If you need a visual to scale for any piece of jewelry, just ask and I'll send more photos.
